PP-4 Acoustic Receiver

Kilovolt presents a modern intelligent fault-locating kit consisting of a portable acoustic-magnetic sensor, high-quality headphones, and a main unit with a display and controls, called the “PP-4 Receiver.” The kit also includes a connecting cable and a charger.

The receiver is designed to locate faults in underground cable lines (CL) as part of a mobile electrical laboratory mounted on a vehicle (ETL), such as CTV-32, ETL-35K, ETL-10. The PP-4 is also used with portable and mobile systems from Kilovolt, such as PCFL-12/600, PCFL-32/2000, CFL-32/2000PD.

The operating principle of the receiver is based on listening to the surface above the buried cable using a sensor equipped with both an acoustic and an electromagnetic sensor. Receiving data from the sensor, the main unit with a display records and processes the data and shows the acoustic and electromagnetic wave values as graphs and numerical readings. In intelligent mode, the receiver calculates and displays the time difference between the acoustic and electromagnetic waves, thereby indirectly indicating how close the operator is to the cable fault location. The acoustic signal can also be monitored through headphones.

The PP-4 receiver meets all the requirements for a modern fault-locating system, combining features such as a high-quality color LCD display with brightness of at least 800 cd/m² for operation in sunlight. The device uses background noise reduction technology by applying various filters. To protect the operator’s hearing, a headphone cut-off function is implemented when the operator touches the sensor handle. The display also includes an electronic compass function that shows the angle between the cable line direction and the sensor, which is a very convenient tool for quickly locating cable faults. There is also an automatic power-off function after more than 5 minutes of inactivity to preserve the charge of the built-in Li-ion battery.
